Why will my garage door not close at night?
Most stuck-open doors fall into two groups: the opener is refusing to close a door that is otherwise fine, or the door itself has a mechanical problem. The first group is often a quick fix. The second is not a job for a homeowner.

What can I safely check first?
These checks do not put you near the springs, cables or brackets. Keep people, pets and vehicles clear of the door while you test.
- Look for anything in the door path or blocking a sensor, such as a bin, a bike or snow.
- Find the two sensors, one on each side of the door. Chamberlain says they sit no higher than 6 inches above the floor.
- Check the sensor lights. On Chamberlain units the amber light is the sending sensor and the green light is the receiving sensor. Both should glow steadily when aligned.
- If a sensor is out of line, loosen its wing nut, point the lens at the other sensor until the light glows steadily, then tighten. Chamberlain also notes that sunlight shining into the receiving sensor can block the signal.
- If the opener lights flash twice, press the LOCK button to turn that feature off.
- Test with the remote and the wall button.
Can I close the door by holding the button down?
Sometimes. Chamberlain says you can close the door on some openers by pressing and holding the door control push bar until the door finishes traveling down. Chamberlain notes this is not available on units manufactured after February 3, 2022, so check your manual before you rely on it.
Only do this if the door moves smoothly and evenly. If it looks tilted, scrapes, or moves with a strain, stop and read the next section.
When should I not force the door?
Stop and leave the door alone if any of these are true:
- The door feels unusually heavy or drops quickly. A worn or broken spring is the usual reason.
- One side sits lower than the other, or the gaps along the sides are uneven.
- A cable looks loose or frayed, or the door scrapes on one track.
- You heard a loud bang before the door stopped working.
DASMA, the garage door trade association, calls a garage door spring “arguably the most important and most dangerous part of your door” and says spring systems “should be repaired only by trained professionals.” It also warns: “Never place your fingers between the door sections.” If a spring has broken, a trade blog notes the door can suddenly weigh hundreds of pounds and that running the opener against it can burn out the motor. Do not keep pressing the button.

How do I secure the garage until morning?
These are common-sense steps for one night. They do not replace the repair.
- Lock the door between the garage and the house, and any side door to the garage.
- Bring valuables, tools and bikes out of the garage if you can do it without going under the door.
- Take garage door remotes out of vehicles parked outside, since a door that will not close is still a door someone could operate.
- Leave the door where it is if it is stable. Do not prop it with your body or push it down against resistance.
- Take a photo of the door, the sensor lights and anything that looks broken. It helps when you call.
- Do not rig homemade stops on the track. A technician should check a door that is out of balance.
When can you come, and what should I have ready?

Can I leave my garage door open overnight?
You can if the door is stable, but the garage and the house are then easier to enter. Lock the door between the garage and the house, move valuables inside and call for a repair.
