The 50 percent rule, with real numbers

Repairs that almost never justify a new door
- A broken spring, which is the most common repair we do. See spring repair in Hugo.

A door with a broken spring is not a worn out door. Springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles, which is roughly 6 to 10 years of normal use, and they are made to be replaced (Good Golly Garage).
Signs the door itself is finished
- Multiple panels rusted, cracked or sagging.
- A frame or track that has warped or rusted through.
- A door that sags or stays out of balance even after new springs.
- A single layer, uninsulated door on a garage that is hard to heat.
- Parts that are no longer made, or a door with no working safety features.
One thing worth noting: what looks like a small dent can be a bent section, so have it looked at before you decide either way (Good Golly Garage).
The Minnesota factor
Freeze and thaw and road salt are hard on steel and on panels. If the garage is attached, under a bedroom or beside the kitchen, an insulated door can make a noticeable difference in a Hugo winter. Should I replace the door or just the opener?
