Garage Door Remote and Keypad Repair Hugo MN
When the remote stops working and the wall button still works, the opener is usually fine. The trouble is the battery, the programming, the lock setting or something in the garage interfering. Here is how to sort it out yourself, and when to call.

Start here: the five minute fix
- Press the wall button. If it works, the opener is fine and the remote or keypad is the problem.
- Replace the battery in the remote. Most take a CR2032. Keypads may take two AAA.
- Check the wall control for a lock button. If the opener lights flash twice when you press the remote, lock mode is on (Chamberlain).
- Try the remote close to the opener, then further away. A remote that only works up close points to a weak battery or interference.
- Turn the garage lights off and test again. LED bulbs can interfere with the opener signal (Chamberlain).
- Try a second remote if you have one. If it works, the first remote is the problem.

Find your opener by the Learn button color
The Learn button on the motor unit tells you which remotes fit. On Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers the color of the button and the year of the opener go together:

Source: Chamberlain support. Colors fade, so a purple button can look brown and a red one orange. Chamberlain’s own pages give slightly different year ranges for yellow, so go by the color rather than the year. Other brands, such as Genie and Craftsman, use different systems.

How to program a remote
On purple, red or orange and green openers, press and release the Learn button, then press the remote button you want to use within about 30 seconds (Chamberlain). Yellow openers give you a longer window, and the steps differ slightly, so follow your manual. Genie keypads work differently again: press 3-5-7, then Program, enter a PIN of 3 to 8 digits, then Program again (Genie).
To erase every remote and keypad, for example after losing one, hold the Learn button for about six seconds until the light goes off (Chamberlain). That clears all of them, so you will have to reprogram every remote afterward. Do not do it casually.
Cold weather and remotes
The CR2032 battery in most remotes is rated for use down to about minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit (Energizer). That covers a Minnesota winter, but capacity drops in the cold and a battery that was already tired dies first. In a JustAnswer thread a homeowner reported that a keypad stopped on the first cold day, flashed its lights and only opened the door minutes later, and the contractor said cold commonly finishes off older keypads. If your remote lives in the car overnight, a fresh battery in the fall and keeping the remote inside on the coldest nights is cheap insurance.
LED bulbs and other interference
This one trips people up. A new LED bulb or a recessed light in the garage can make the remote work with the lights off and fail with them on. Chamberlain names LED bulbs as a possible cause. An electrician forum thread describes LED drivers giving off radio noise near the frequencies openers use, and the fixes people report are switching the bulbs, moving the fixture or adding a ferrite choke on the wiring. It is worth testing with the lights off before you buy a new remote.
Car remote or phone app not working
Built in car buttons (HomeLink) cover the common frequencies and work with LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and Craftsman openers. HomeLink says to use fresh handheld batteries and hold the handheld a few inches from the buttons, and an older HomeLink may need a compatibility bridge kit on some openers (HomeLink). If your phone app stopped working with a smart home hub, Chamberlain blocked third party myQ integrations in November 2023, which broke many setups (Home Assistant). That is a software change, not a fault with your opener.
